Is Beef Jerky Good for Weight Loss?
The quick version Yes, beef jerky can fit into a weight-loss diet. It’s high in protein, easy to portion and can be a satisfying savoury snack when you’re managing your overall calorie intake. The main things to keep an eye on are portion size, sodium and the nutrition panel, because not all jerky stacks up the same. We’ve all done the pantry stare: door open, one hand hovering, quietly negotiating with a packet of something. If weight loss is the goal, the snacks you reach for can make a difference. Beef jerky brings plenty of protein and a proper savoury hit, but calories, portion size and what’s actually in the bag still matter. Let’s get into it. So, does beef jerky really help you lose weight? Beef jerky won’t make you lose weight on its own, but it can be a useful snack when weight loss is the goal. Its high protein content can help you feel fuller between meals, which may make it a little easier to manage your overall calorie intake. The key is how it fits into the bigger picture. Portion size, calories and the rest of your diet still count, which brings us to the part that actually matters: the calorie deficit. How weight loss actually works (the boring but important bit) Weight loss generally requires a calorie deficit, which means taking in less energy than your body uses over time. The key is finding an approach you can actually stick with, rather than going too hard and making it miserable. That’s where your snack choices can help. Protein can help you feel fuller for longer, so a protein-rich snack can be a handy option when you’re managing your overall calorie intake. If you’re tracking calories, our Traditional Beef Jerky contains 289 calories and 54.8g of protein per 100g. A 30g portion works out to around 87 calories and 16.4g of protein, giving you plenty of protein in a relatively small snack. What's in beef jerky? The macros that matter Beef jerky packs plenty of protein, with the exact mix of protein, carbs and fat varying between flavours. Protein is the headline act, and beef jerky protein is where it really earns its keep. Here’s how a few of our flavours stack up per 100g: Beef jerky (per 100g) Calories Protein Carbs Fat Traditional 289 54.8g 10.7g 2.6g Extra Hot 321 60g 12g 6.2g Smokey 314 53.9g 12.7g 4.9g Traditional, Extra Hot or Smokey. Whichever flavour you reach for, you’re getting air-dried, MSA-grade Australian beef with plenty of protein packed in. Want even more protein? Our Snap Sticks pack 62.1g per 100g, with just 1.8g of carbs. If macros are new to you, our guide on what macros are and whether you need to count them breaks it down without the jargon. Why protein keeps you fuller for longer Protein can help you feel fuller for longer, which is one reason protein-rich snacks can be handy when you’re managing your overall calorie intake. It’s also important for building and maintaining muscle, especially if training is part of your routine. We’ve broken down how protein helps keep you full without the science lecture if you want a deeper dive. Beef jerky vs the usual snack suspects Compared with chips, chocolate and muesli bars, beef jerky packs considerably more protein per 100g. If protein is a priority, that makes it a handy option when snack time rolls around. Snack (approx. per 100g) Calories Protein Chilli Beef Jerky 321 52.4g Potato chips ~530 ~6g Milk chocolate ~535 ~7g Muesli bar ~450 ~6g Comparison food data sourced from the Australian Food Composition Database. Calorie values are converted from kilojoules and rounded to the nearest whole calorie. Values are per 100g and will vary between individual products and brands. The calorie column tells part of the story, but the protein column is where jerky really stands out. And remember, these figures are per 100g. A typical portion will be much smaller, so it’s worth comparing the nutrition panel based on how much you’ll actually eat. Is beef jerky keto or low-carb friendly? Beef jerky can fit a keto or low-carb diet, but it depends on the flavour, recipe and your own carb target. Marinades can add carbs, so it’s always worth checking the nutrition panel before digging in. Chasing something lower in carbs? Biltong and droëwors are both high-protein options worth a look, with fewer carbs than jerky. Not all jerky is equal (and this is where it matters) Not all jerky is made the same. Ingredients, marinades and nutrition can vary between brands and flavours, so if weight loss is the goal, it’s worth checking the label for protein, calories, sugar and sodium. Our jerky starts with MSA-grade Australian beef and family recipes we’ve spent more than 20 years refining. The meat is marinated for over 24 hours, then air-dried fresh in our Wangara factory in WA for that proper chewy texture and bold flavour. So, is beef jerky healthy? It can be a protein-rich snack as part of a balanced diet, but portion size and sodium still matter. Our jerky isn’t sugar-free either, so the nutrition panel is always worth a look if you’re keeping track of what you eat. How much beef jerky should you eat for weight loss? There’s no one-size-fits-all serving of beef jerky for weight loss. How much works for you depends on your overall calorie intake, protein needs and the rest of your diet. The easiest approach is to check the serving size and nutrition panel on your chosen jerky, then portion it to suit your goals. That way, you still get the protein and flavour without losing track of what you’re eating. Easy ways to work jerky into your day The best place to keep jerky? Wherever snack time tends to catch you out. Post-workout: Chuck a pack in your gym bag for an easy protein-rich snack after training. At work: Keep some in your desk drawer or work bag for the 3pm snack hunt. With lunch: Chop it over a salad for extra protein, texture and a proper savoury hit. On the road: Add it to the road-trip stash so you’ve got something ready when hunger hits. It’s also an easy addition to your high-protein meal-prep snacks when you want to make the week a little easier. Frequently asked questions Is beef jerky good for a diet? Beef jerky can fit into a balanced diet, particularly if you’re looking for a convenient, high-protein snack. What matters is choosing a jerky that suits your goals and checking the nutrition panel for calories, protein, carbs, sugar and sodium. How much beef jerky can I eat a day for weight loss? A. No set amount works for everyone. How much beef jerky fits into your day depends on your overall calorie intake, protein needs and the rest of your diet. Check the serving size and nutrition panel on your favourite flavour, then choose a portion that works with your overall goals. Is beef jerky or biltong better for weight loss? A. Both can be handy high-protein snacks, so the better choice comes down to your goals and what you enjoy eating. If you’re watching your carbs, Traditional Biltong comes in lower than our Traditional Beef Jerky. Jerky brings that classic chewy texture and a bigger range of marinades and flavours. Keeping carbs particularly low? Biltong may suit you better. Otherwise, pick the one you’ll actually enjoy. Is beef jerky high in calories? A. Beef jerky can be calorie-dense per 100g, but portion size gives you a better idea of what you’re actually eating. Our Traditional Beef Jerky contains 289 calories per 100g, which works out to around 87 calories in a 30g portion, along with 16.4g of protein. Can you eat beef jerky every day? A. Beef jerky can be enjoyed regularly as part of a balanced diet. Like most air-dried meat snacks, it can be high in sodium, so portion size and the rest of your diet are worth keeping in mind. Think of it as one handy protein option alongside the other foods you eat, rather than the whole show. Learn moreMovie Night Snack Ideas for a Winter Watch
You’ve picked the movie, claimed the best spot on the couch, and got the heater cranking. But what about the snacks? If you’re tired of reaching for the same old chips and lollies every winter movie night, fear not. We’ve brought together some of our favourite movie night snacks for big flavour, proper crunch and plenty of savoury goodness. Why your movie night snacks deserve an upgrade A good night in is all about comfort. Warm blanket, low effort, something worth watching and snacks close enough that you don’t have to move once the movie starts. But when your go-to spread starts feeling a bit average, it pays to change things up. The best movie night snacks should still feel fun, but they should also keep you satisfied through the whole film. Healthy movie night snacks that still bring the flavour Beef Jerky If there’s one snack that can carry a movie night spread, it’s beef jerky. It’s chewy, savoury, easy to pass around and doesn’t need plates, cutlery or a pile of napkins to enjoy. The Jerky Co’s Beef Jerky is made with 100% Aussie MSA-grade beef, marinated for over 24 hours and air-dried to lock in that mouthwatering flavour. Sweet BBQ is a winner if you want something that’s crowd-friendly, while Chilli, Texan or Extra Hot bring the heat for anyone who likes their movie snacks with a bit of bite. It sits right at home next to popcorn, cheese, crackers and a cold drink. Only this time, it brings a bit more substance to the couch. Biltong For longer watches, Biltong is a solid move. It’s thicker than jerky, softer in texture, and has that rich, meaty chew that keeps you coming back between scenes. The Jerky Co’s Biltong is made using traditional air-drying methods, with options like Traditional, Chilli, Garlic, Smokey, Sweet BBQ and Texan. Go sliced if you want something ready for the snack bowl, or unsliced if you like cutting it fresh for a grazing board. It’s a great pick when you want something savoury and satisfying without building a full meal around movie night. Just add cheese, pickles or crackers and you’re sorted. Snap sticks Snap sticks are made for movie night grazing. They’re easy to grab, easy to share and have a snappy bite that makes them feel right at home in the snack bowl. They’re especially handy if you’re watching with a group, because you can throw a few flavours into the mix and let everyone pick their favourite. Pair them with popcorn, cheese cubes or a simple dip, and you’ve got a snack that disappears fast once the opening credits roll. Pork crackle If your movie night needs crunch, Poppa Porky’s Pork Crackle is an easy win. It gives you that salty, crispy bite people usually chase from chips, but with a meatier flavour and a more satisfying finish. It works especially well on a grazing board because it breaks up the softer textures from biltong, cheese and dips. Add a bowl next to your jerky and snap sticks, then watch it get picked at all night. For anyone who loves a crunchy savoury snack, this is the one to keep within arm’s reach. Air-popped popcorn Popcorn still deserves a place in the movie night lineup. It’s light, easy to share and basically made for couch snacking. The trick is to keep it simple and add flavour without drowning it in butter. A little sea salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder or grated parmesan can take it from plain to seriously tasty. You can also mix it through your grazing board for a lighter bite between richer snacks like jerky, biltong and pork crackle. It’s low effort and always a crowd-pleaser. Just maybe make a bigger bowl than you think you’ll need. Fruit Jerky or fresh fruit Every good movie night spread needs something a little sweet. Fruit Jerky is a great pick when you want that chewy, sweet hit without reaching straight for the lolly bag. The Jerky Co’s fruit jerky is made from 100% Australian air-dried fruit, with options such as mango, pineapple, banana, red apple, and fruit salad. It adds colour to the snack board, balances out the savoury stuff and gives you something lighter to grab between bites of jerky or biltong. Fresh fruit works well too. Grapes, apple slices and strawberries are easy to serve, easy to share and don’t feel too heavy when you’re settling in for a long watch. Nuts, cheese and pickles Once the main snacks are sorted, a few simple extras can round out the whole spread. Nuts bring crunch, cheese adds richness, and pickles cut through the savoury flavours with a sharp little kick. You don’t need to overthink it, either. Aged cheddar, brie, cashews, almonds, cornichons or pickled onions all work well with beef jerky and biltong. They make the board feel more generous without turning it into a full dinner situation. This is where movie night starts feeling less like a quick snack raid and more like a solid winter grazing session. Roasted chickpeas Roasted chickpeas are a handy one if you want extra crunch without opening another bag of chips. They’re crisp, savoury and easy to season depending on the mood of the night. Keep them simple with sea salt and smoked paprika, or add chilli powder if the movie calls for a bit of heat. They also work well on a grazing board because they fill the gaps between the bigger bites. How to build the ultimate movie night grazing board Step #1: Pick your main snacks first Start with the stuff people will reach for all night. Beef jerky brings the bold flavour, biltong adds a thicker chew, and snap sticks are easy to grab between scenes. A mix of textures makes the board feel more interesting than one big bowl of the same thing. Step #2: Bring in the crunch Add pork crackle, popcorn or roasted chickpeas for that crispy bite. This keeps the board feeling snacky, without making chips the only crunchy option on the table. Step #3: Add a sweet break Fruit jerky, grapes, apple slices or strawberries work well between savoury bites. They add colour too, which helps the board look like you put in more effort than you did. Step #4: Round it out Finish with cheese, crackers, pickles, nuts or a simple dip. Keep everything easy to grab so no one’s fumbling around with knives and forks halfway through the film. Stock up for your next winter movie night If you’d rather skip the last-minute snack run, The Jerky Co Gift Hampers and Bundles make it easy to load up in one go. They’re packed with flavour, great for sharing, and a solid option if you’re buying for a mate, family member or movie buff who loves a savoury snack. Grab your favourites online, build your own movie night stash, or find your nearest Jerky Co kiosk and stock up before the next big watch. Â

There's something quietly humbling about seeing your brand on the side of a mountain. The Jerky Co recently had the privilege of supporting the Happiness Co Foundation's Nepal Base Camp Trek - a fundraising adventure that took a group of remarkable people to the foot of the world's highest peak, not just to test themselves physically, but to raise vital funds for mental health, wellbeing, and community connection. We weren't there in person. But our flag was. And if we're honest, we like to think our jerky was too - packed into kit bags as the kind of no-fuss, high-protein fuel that keeps you moving when the trail gets tough and the altitude starts to bite. Out there, you don't want complicated. You want something that works. The trek wasn't just about altitude. It was about the kind of grit and camaraderie that builds between people who push through something hard together - the early mornings, the thin air, the moments of doubt, and the moments of pure clarity that only come when you're a long way from your comfort zone. Every step was taken in service of something bigger than the summit. The Happiness Co Foundation and the Barbarians put together something genuinely special, and the trekkers who completed this journey did so on behalf of communities that need it most. We're proud to have played even a small supporting role. A documentary capturing the full journey is set to premiere later this year - and if the images from the trek are anything to go by, it's going to be something worth watching. We'll share more details when they come through. To learn more about the Happiness Co Foundation and the work they do, visit happinessco.org. The Jerky Co has always been about more than meat snacks. It's about people doing hard things - in the wild, on the field, and in everyday life. This trek reminded us why we care about the communities we're part of. Here's to the trekkers. And to everyone working to make those communities a little happier and healthier.
